The main square and downtown area
There is really only one city on Cozumel and although the
name is San Miguel, most simply refer to it as Cozumel. The downtown and main square is a beautiful area with lovely shops for jewelry, T-shirts
and exciting Mexican and Mayan decorations and souvenirs. There are also a
number of great restaurants downtown, plus banks and ATM machines,
pharmacies and a local market with handicrafts, leather and silver. Be
sure to visit the square Sunday evening where there is fun, fiestas and music to
enjoy. Off the main oceanfront street there are wide sidewalks, inviting
you back to visit some of the many shops and restaruants that
are are on the first couple of blocks back from the ocean. |

Avenida Rafael Melgar is the main waterfront street with a beautiful view of the
ocean. The street is lined with shops of all kinds and there are several very
striking monuments, including the Mayan statues and the divers arch.

Ferry to the Mainland
Right
across from the main square is the dock where you can catch a ferry to the
mainland.
The trip takes about 35 minutes, and the ferry takes you to Playa
del Carmen. From there you can take a bus to Cancun, Tulum, Xcaret, Xel-Ha or
other sites in the Yucatan.

South of the main square, a
lighthouse and public beach
Approximately 1 1/2
miles south of the main square there is a lighthouse and a public
beach area called Playa Caletitas.
There are even outdoor showers and a restaurant. |

North of the main square past
a public beach and toward the Marina area
Go about 1 1/2
miles north of the main square
and you will come to a public beach, Playa
Casitas. If you continue for another mile you'll find the north marina
called the Abrigo where many of the fishing boats and other
smaller boats are docked. |

The Corpus Cristi Residential Area
|

The newest, and what many consider the nicest residential area on Cozumel is called Corpus Cristi, and it includes an
area between this large church on 20th Ave. south (photo at left) and the waterfront street,
Ave. Rafael Melgar. The Corpus Cristi area is about 3/4 mile south of the main
square and is a several blocks wide,
extending from 11th street South to about 23rd street South and from the ocean
to Ave. 20. In
general, property in this area is more expensive than in most other areas of
Cozumel. |

The area is within walking distance to the main square,
close to a very large grocery store and 6 screen cinema and
within walking distance to Playa Caletita, a local in-town beach area. The
closer you are to the ocean of course, the higher the cost of
the land. There are fewer and fewer vacant lots in Corpus Cristi
and many street that has just one or two homes on them 7 or 8 years
ago, now have homes on most of the lots. You will find a few very
popular vacation rental villas in Corpus Cristi, but local residents
of Cozumel find this area very appealing too. The majority of the
homes here are private residences. |
