GoCozumel Newsletter, September 2008
A personal look at the island, written by an American who
moved to Cozumel in May 2000.
Update on remodeling in the main square downtown
Quite a large area of the downtown has being remodeled. Some building
were totally torn down and new buildings constructed in their place. In
the September 2007 newsletter I included some photos of the work
that was underway. This month I have some "Before" and
"After" photos.
The first row has photos of the buildings at the back of the square,
just behind the large clock tower. The second row shows the clock
tower and part of the main square. In the photo on the left taken
last year you see the temporary buildings that were on the main square,
and now those temporary building are gone.

Sweet N Low thief
When we stopped at a restaurant the
other for lunch we were sitting under their large palapa,
and we saw one of the big black birds fly in, grab a packet of Sweet N
Low off one of the empty tables, and then sit on the back of a chair,
tear it open and eat the Sweet N Low! Guess that bird must think
it really tastes like sugar!
On a recent shopping trip with a friend, we saw a large collection of metal wall hangings at Los Cincos Soles. One that featured a couple of scarlet macaws was just perfect for a large wall in my house, so after coming home to measure and make sure it would work we drove back to purchase it. They carefully wrapped it to protect it, I folded down the back seat in my car and opened the hatchback. It fit perfectly and I was able to get it home that afternoon and up. This metal wall hanging of two scarlet macaws is 1.25 meters wide (just over 4 feet) by 1 meter tall (a bit over 3 feet).

Pedigree Puppies
There is now a company called Royal Dogs that will offer pedigree dogs
in Cozumel. They plan to have puppies available so that people can come
and see them and be able to decide which breed they prefer.
If you wish to contact them, email cozumelnewsletter@gocozumel.com,
please put "Royal Dogs" in the subject, and we will be glad to
give you their contact information.
Statue during September During September there was a statue of an
eagle at the traffic circle at the intersection of Calle 11 (also called
Ave. Andres Quintanna Roo) and Ave. 30 (also called Ave. Pedro Joaquin.)
The eagle was similar to the symbol on the Mexican flag which is an
eagle perched on a cactus and the eagle has a snake in it;s beak. The
statue was only there during September as Mexican Independence Day is
September 16.
Feet to the Fire
I have been told that "Feet to the Fire" is the translation of the name of this restaurant, Al Pie del Carbon. I’ve stopped by to eat here a couple of times. Once I ordered a meal of aracherra to go, and the next time we stopped to eat at one of their outside tables. Good food, grilled on an open fire. Enjoyed it.
Al Pie del Carbon is on the corner of Calle 6 and Ave. 5. There is a parking lot on Ave. 5 that is less than a ½ block north of this restaurant, so it’s very handy.
EXCHANGE RATE During September the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from
9.9 to 10.2 pesos to the U.S. dollar, however the exchange range did go up in
October and those rates will be in our October newsletter.
Gracias y hasta luego,
