GoCozumel Monthly Newsletter, September  2007

A personal look at the island, written by an American  who has lived on Cozumel since May 2000.

Patchwork pillows
Recently found some patchwork pillows at Shan’s in the Forum Shops on Ave. Melgar (the main oceanfront street) at the corner of Calle 10 which is at the northern end of the main downtown area. It you go in the front door keep going straight back until you get to the escalator and it you’ll look to the right you’ll see Shan’s. If you come in the side door on Calle 10, look straight ahead after you come in and you’ll see Shan’s. They have a selection of pillow covers, table cloths and runners in this type of patchwork pattern and no two are alike.
Update on remodeling downtown
Quite a large area of the downtown is being remodeled. Some building are being totally torn down, and I've been told new ones will be constructed in their place. The bank building at the back of the square, just behind the clock tower is still there, but the buildings all around it that housed shops of all sorts are being demolished.

Stores that were located in these buildings are now  in temporary buildings on the square itself. Photos below are of workers on the building at the back of the square, the shops on the square (see the clock tower in the photo, and the last photo it taken from Casa Denis.

Computer needs
For your computer needs...whether it’s a whole system, a new monitor, a printer, ink cartridges, blank CDs or DVDs, removable hard drives, flash drives, a mouse, connectors of all kinds. I’ve even bought specialty papers for printing there too. Compucentro is on Calle 11, between Ave. 5 and Ave. 10.
Work being done on streets
There is a lot of work being done to the streets on Cozumel. A number of the streets downtown between Ave. 10 and the waterfront are having work done on them, and when I asked I was told that they were burying phone and electric cables. I have since learned that at least on some of the streets, the sidewalks will be widened and tourists should find it an easier walk from the oceanfront street to Ave. 5 and Ave. 10.

Also, there is work being done in residential areas. They are putting  a median down the middle of Ave. 10 between Calle 15 (Ave. Xel Ha) and Calle 19, and a median down Ave. 17, between Ave. 20 and Ave. 10.

Bright colors
Super Hits II at the corner of Ave. 30 and Calle 15 (also now called Xel Ha) just repainted recently. It’s now orange and red with a touch of yellow!!!

Independence Day
September 16 is Mexican Independence Day, and the celebrations begin the night of September 15. Here on Cozumel it began with a real bang…actually a lot of bangs as just after 11pm the fireworks display began. They were set off in the oceanfront area just across from the Palacio Municipal. I had dinner at Wynston’s, the restaurant that is on the top floor of the new El Cantil condo building. With the glass windows all around the restaurant, it seemed the perfect place to watch the fireworks as they were virtually right next door. This photo was taken from the balcony of the restaurant after the fireworks, and it may be difficult to see, but the park across the street from the Palacios Municipal was filled with thousands of people, and the music and celebration continued long into the night.

Selling flags
Before most  national holidays, there are carts that travel around selling Mexican flags, and you see them all over town.

Daddy Yankee in Cozumel
Coming to Cozumel on Tuesday, October 16, and we understand it will be at the baseball stadium…a Daddy Yankee concert. Should be quite an event for Cozumel. Tickets start at 400 pesos...about $40 U.S.

I've seen tickets on sale just outside Chedraui grocery store, at the entrance by the covered parking area.

EXCHANGE RATE
During September the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from 10.55 to 10.6 pesos to the U.S. dollar.

Gracias y hasta luego,
