GoCozumel Newsletter, August 2008
Our newsletter is a personal look at the island, written by an American
who moved to Cozumel in May 2000.
Mexican Independence Day
 |
September 16 celebrates the day in 1810 when Miguel Hidalgo, a Catholic priest in the village of Dolores delivered a speech now called El Grito de Dolores. A movement toward Mexican independence from centuries of Spanish rule had already been in progress, (particularly since Napoleon invaded Spain in 1808) but Hidalgos call to action in the pre-dawn hours of September 16, 1810 are said to be what actually began the Mexican War of Independence a war that lasted 10 years. |
Its been reported that among his words were
"Mexicanos, Viva Mexico" and "Viva la Independencia!" Independence Day celebrations all over Mexico begin at 11pm the night of September 15th and continue on September 16th.
Here on Cozumel there are usually fireworks that began late on the evening of the 15th and
I'll go up on my roof about 11pm to watch. On the 16th there is usually a parade. Normally there are carnival rides in the evening set up in the area across from the Palacio
Municipal, but there has been construction on a new park in the area
across from the Palacio Municipal where the soccer field used to be, so
I'm not certain where the evenings celebrations will be. |
Minigolf
In addition to the Cozumel Country Club golf course which is a
beautiful Nicholas designed 18 hole course, for those of us who enjoy a much more scaled down version, Cozumel has a mini golf course. It is downtown, at the corner of Ave. 15 and Calle 1. |

Live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
I have mentioned both The Money Bar and the restaurant Piratas in recent newsletters. I have stopped for lunch several times at The Money Bar and just recently, a couple of good friends and I decided on a Sunday evening to go to Piratas for dinner. Piratas
has a good selection of food plus beer and mixed drinks. |
| They are about 5 miles south of town between Fiesta Americana Hotel and Chankanaab Park and are open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am until…
Piratas now has live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night beginning at 6pm.
There are tables outside where they group plays but it was a bit too loud for us as we wanted to talk. We opted to go inside where the music was not as loud and
where there was air conditioning. The photo to the right is
thanks to Diana Wynne. Appreciate it! |

|
The Money Bar also has live music from 6-8pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
They are at Dzul Ha Reef, about 4 miles south of town
on the old oceanfront road. Good food and drinks here! On the weekends you can drive south, stop for something to eat and drink and listen to the live music at either The Money Bar or Piratas. |
Cozumel for Christmas or New Years
There are still a few great vacation rental homes and even some luxury
oceanfront condos available during Christmas or New Years week, so we’re listing
a few
here with links to photos and information: |
New York City Pizza
 |
I’d heard from friends that the pizza here was wonderful, and they were right! On a recent Saturday night I went down and ordered one of their large pizzas
(20 inches across) with pepperoni, hot sausage, onions, mushrooms and garlic to take back to my house and share with friends.
The restaurant is small but it’s air conditioned, there is satellite TV, Wi-Fi and a U.S. phone. You can buy pizza by the slice or a whole pizza and they also have calzone, sandwiches, pasta,
salads and cold beer. |
|
New York City Pizza is in the downtown area on Ave. Rosado Salas just a 1/ 2 block from the waterfront and their phone number is 872-7518. Ave. Rosado Salas is a one way street going inland, so from the oceanfront street, Ave. Rafael Melgar, turn inland on Ave. Rosado Salas and look to the left for the New York City Pizza logo on the glass front of the restaurant. It’s about ½ block off the oceanfront street. |
Up to 50% OFF – Storewide clearance

If you like quality furniture and decorator items at bargain prices, then you need to hurry to Ambiants as soon as possible for their clearance sale. Everything is on sale and there are many items priced up to 50% off. I have been by
several times and bought lamps, candle holders and candles, some beautiful flowers and a very attractive wall mirror. In addition to decorative accessories there are also great bargains on
beautiful furniture. Ambiants is on Ave. 30 between Calle 17 and Calle 19, but hurry before everything is gone.
