GoCozumel Monthly Newsletter, June
2008
Our newsletter is a personal look at the island, written by an American
who moved to Cozumel in May 2000.
| Cheap flights from Austin, Texas – from
$9.99 + taxes each way. |
 |
Sound unbelievable? I thought so too, but there is now an airline that is flying from Austin, Texas to Cancun, Mexico with some very cheap fares. It’s called VivaAerobus and if you book in advance on a day that there is not high demand, they have rates as low as $9.99 each way plus tax. |
| After landing in Cancun you take a bus or taxi from the Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen
(bus fare is the cheapest - $8.50 U.S. per person) and then a passenger ferry
from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel ($12 U.S. per person)
I don’t know anything about this airline except what I have read online, but I thought it sounded really interesting. From what I have read it is definitely “no frill”. No assigned seating, no free snacks or drinks…water is not even free but they do have a menu of items you can purchase.
As far as I can tell, right now the only U.S. city this airline flies to is Austin, Texas. They have daily flights, direct and non stop from Austin, Texas to Cancun, Mexico and back. If you are able to find a flight for $9.99 each way (or $19.99 – they charge $10 if you check a suitcase) by the time you add taxes it comes to around $85-$90 each way or about $175 U.S. round trip. Still, that is a great deal less than airline prices I found online for other airlines.
If you live close enough to Austin, Texas you might want to check this out.
I can't personally recommend it as I’ve never flown it and only know what I’ve read online. What I did was Google “VivaAerobus” and I read about it and you can go to the VivaAerobus website and read what they say.
Their website is http://www.vivaaerobus.com
If you find good air fares you may also want to check into the special discounts of up to 20% off the already low summer and fall season rates on a select group of
Cozumel vacation rental properties. These are for last minute bookings. Some are available for reservations made within 6 weeks of arrival and some are for reservations made within 4 weeks of arrival.
Email
to ask about last minute specials. For those of you near the Austin, Texas area, you could enjoy a great summer or fall get away at
a very appealing rate.

New supermarket
There is a very, very large building under construction near the
corner of Ave. Rafael Melgar and Calle 11. I’ve
been told it will be Mega Comercial Mexicana. The outer shell of this
huge store is up, and construction in moving along very rapidly. As we
understand, this will be a large grocery store plus...a store that is on
the order of a super Wal Mart. |

Fathers Day
In Mexico, Fathers Day is celebrated each year on June 15, regardless of the day of the week it falls on. |

Zippety Do Dah!
Now in Cozumel, zip lines! They are quite an adventure and these are geared for family fun so they are not extreme. They have 7 towers, and I’ve been told that they make 2 rounds. The company is called “Fly High Adventures” and they are on the main highway a bit over 4 ½ m miles south of town. Look for them on the right as you are going south. |

|
|
You climb the tower, and then “zip” across on a line, suspended high above the jungle to the next tower. I only recently discovered this fun new attraction and haven’t gone here in Cozumel yet but I did experience zip lines in Costa Rica and they are great fun! They tell me that you can not only see the jungle but the ocean. The cost is $60 per person and with the orientation and 2 rounds of the zip line circuit it takes about 2 ½ to 3 hours.

Lord of the O Rings
After cleaning my pool, I decided it was time to change out the O ring on the plastic top to the pump as there seemed to be a very small leak and thought that a new O ring might solve the problem. With the pump off, I unscrewed the top just as I always do to clean out the filter in the pump, I took out the O ring and went to the pool supply store on Ave. 30 near the corner of Calle 5. They didn’t carry O rings that size, so I then went to El Exito. They sell all kinds of tools, light bulbs, pool pumps and supplies. They are on the corner of Calle 6 and Ave. 35. They didn’t have O rings that size either but
sent me to another store...and they sent me to yet another. Finally at
one store they gave me the name, address and phone number of someone they called the “Lord of the O Rings”.
Although they keep a good supply of the sizes of O rings most in demand they didn’t happen to have this size
in stock but they said they could order them for me. Sure enough, only 3 days later
I received a call to tell me the O rings I ordered had arrived.
If you are in need of a O ring for scuba equipment, an underwater camera or housing,
a pool pump, PVC fittings or other applications, there is someone here on Cozumel that can help you. If they don’t have it in stock at the moment, they can order it for you.
Their local number is 872-4994 and the cell phone number is 044 987 101-9687. |

During June, the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from
10.0 to 10.05 pesos to the U.S. dollar.
Gracias y hasta luego,
