GoCozumel Monthly Newsletter, May 2008
Our newsletter is a personal look at the island, written by an American who moved to Cozumel in May 2000.
Shrimp Tacos
 |
At Cameron Dorado, they make delicious shrimp tacos and tortas. The breaded shrimp are put on either a tortilla for the little tacos or a sandwich roll for a
torta. They are topped with a little mayonnaise and sliced onion. Really delicious, and the prices are quite reasonable. 15 pesos each for each shrimp taco (start with 2 or 3 and you can always order more) and tortas are 39 pesos each. |
 |
Since the exchange rate is now very close to 10 pesos for $1 U.S. dollar, a meal here of 3 shrimp tacos with a soft drink is about $5-$6 U.S. |

|
|
Cameron Dorado is on the right on the transversal road (Ave. Juarez) about a mile or so past Ave. 65. Someone told me that it’s Juarez at Ave. 105, but I didn’t see a street sign so I’m not positive.
They are open Monday through Saturday from 7am to 2:30pm. |
Christmas and New Years-2008/2009
People who wish to come to Cozumel over the Christmas or New Years holidays and stay in a private villa or a luxury oceanfront condo have already begun making their reservations, so many of the villas are already booked. If you’re considering a trip to sunny Cozumel for the holidays, don’t wait too long.
Here are some suggestions for different size groups for the holidays 2008 and 2009.
The links to each of these vacation rental villas or condos are in the newsletter online. |

Christmas Week |
Cost of gasoline
The cost of gasoline in the U.S. is quite high now, so I checked on the price of gas here on Cozumel. In the past, gasoline prices were a good bit higher than in the U.S.
I recently filled up my gas tank, and the cost per liter (a bit over a quart) of regular was 6.82 pesos. To change that from pesos per liter to dollars per gallon, with the local exchange rate now about 10.05, that is 68.54 cents U.S. per liter. It takes 3.7853 liters to make a gallon, so if I’ve done my math right, that comes to about $2.59 U.S. per gallon for regular. |
Mothers Day in Cozumel
Regardless of the day of the week it falls on, May 10 is the day that Mother’s Day is celebrated. |
Super Max is now Soriana
 |
The grocery store on Ave. 30 that used to be called Super Maz is now Soriana.
I’ve been to the Soriana store in Playa del Carmen, and it was terrific. Looking forward to stopping by and seeing
the changes they have made to this store. |

Tender Arrachera
Normally the word “tender” is not something you think of when you think of arrachera, but there is now a great restaurant on Cozumel where you can find arrachera that is not only tender, but also delicious, and the prices are quite reasonable. |

|
|
The name is HC de Monterrey, and you’ll find it on Ave. 5 sur between Calle 9 and 9 Bis. They are open every day for lunch and dinner, from 1pm to 10pm.
The service is very quick, and my favorite is the arrachera national that includes arrachera (seasoned skirt steak) and they will grill it and serve it to your order…rare, medium or well done. Even well done this beef is very tender. Along with that you can have your choice of a grilled onion (cebolla) or a baked potato (papa). They have a sauce for your meat, and provide sour cream with garlic for your baked potato. The cost is 115 pesos which at the current local exchange rate is about $11.50 U.S.
I’m beginning to lose count of how many times I’ve been there and enjoyed this delicious meal.
I’ve also gone by and ordered just the arrachera to go. A kilo of arrachera (2.2 pounds) is only 130 pesos. At the current local exchange rate that’s about $13.00 U.S.
They cook the arrachera on their grill and it’s ready in only about 10-15 minutes. Quick service, it’s delicious and tender too.
They do have other things to eat including steaks, ribs and even chicken, but I’ve enjoyed the arrachera so much I haven’t tried the other selections yet. |

EXCHANGE RATE
During May, the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from
10.05 to 10.1 pesos to the U.S. dollar.
Gracias y hasta luego,
