GoCozumel Monthly Newsletter, May 2007
Our newsletter is a personal look at the island, written by an American who moved to Cozumel in May 2000.
 |
Tequila Store
I’ve written about the tequila tour before that is on the
transversal road on the way to the other side of the island. Recently, I
noticed that there was a store downtown that carries their tequila.
It’s on Ave. Salas at the corner of Calle 5. I have a bottle of their
almond flavored tequila and it’s delicious. |
Margaritaville
For those of you familiar with Cozumel, this new restaurant (and
yes, it is a Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville) is at the former location
of Aquario Restaurant at the corner of the main waterfront street (Ave.
Rafael Melgar) and Calle 11. It’s a totally different atmosphere
than Aquario of course. You can hear the music from the
street…and actually, at times even from across the street. |

|
| Still haven’t stopped there to eat yet, but
friends have told me that they really liked the food. They commented that
they thought it was rather expensive but the servings were very large.
Although they ate until they were stuffed they still left about half of
what they were served as it was simply too much to eat. They did enjoy it
enough to say that they plan to go back, but the next time they would
order only one thing and share it. |
 |
1.5 bar
A bar located right next door to Margaritaville, and since it has
been rebuilt I included it too. Haven’t been to this one either. |
Bowling
 |
The Cozumel bowling alley is a modern
facility, and it’s located on Ave. 5 at the corner of Calle 13. I
haven’t been bowling there in a while, but I understand they are open
7 days a week with hours from 11am to midnight and until 1am Friday and
Saturday night. The cost per game varies from $3.00 to $4.50 a
game and the cost to rent shoes ranges from $1.00 to $1.50. From
what I’ve been able to tell, the highest prices are 7pm to closing
Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The lowest prices I’ve seen posted are
Monday-Saturday between 11am and 7pm. They do have a snack
bar. |

Tennis courts
There is a large municipal sports area with soccer fields, basket
ball courts, a swimming pool, and tennis courts that covers the area
between Ave. 40 and Ave. 50, and between Calle 11 and Calle 15. I
stopped on Ave. 50 to snap a photo of the tennis courts as I do have
people who have asked about them before.
The swimming pool there is fairly new…maybe only a year or two
old, and although I’ve driven by a number of times I never seen anyone
in the pool. The lanes are set up as if ready for a swim meet so all I
can assume is that the pool is not open to the public for fun swim, but
used by the city for competitive swimming. |

Veterinarian office open
|
There is now a veterinarian
office near the Corpus Cristi area. It’s run by Ivan who is a former
Humane Society veterinarian. It called “Oasis Animal” and the
location is on Ave. 25 between Calle 11 and Calle 13. Hours are
9am -1pm and 3pm -7pm Monday-Friday, and on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.
For emergencies, the local cell phone number is 044 983 113-0708. Ivan
does speak English. |

|
| Although there are a lot of cats,
frogs and iguanas that like to hang around my house I don’t currently have
any pets, but when Ivan was with the Humane Society he was a great
help to me and friends who have taken their pets to him since he's
opened his veterinarian clinic were very pleased. They offer full services,
including X-rays, dental service, vaccinations, surgery, testing and
hospitalization for pets. In addition they do grooming and sell pet
food. |
Movie Theatre
 |
There is a multi screen cinema on Cozumel called Cinepolis, and
it’s in the Chedraui mall that is on Ave. 5 between Calle 15 and 17.
There is a parking area under cover that is for both Chedraui and for
the shops in the mall and the movie theatre. After you enter the
mall area take the escalator or the stairs to the second level for the
theatre. |
| Just to give you an idea about how
current the movies are. On May 26 they were showing Spiderman 3 and
Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End. Both were showing on 2 screens.
One screen showed the movie in English with Spanish subtitles, and the
other screen showed the movie dubbed into Spanish. |
|
EXCHANGE RATE
During May, the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from
10.5 to 10.6 pesos to the U.S. dollar.
Gracias y hasta luego,
