Coming back to Cozumel
After several rather quiet weeks of fewer tourists than normal in
Cozumel, the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) lifted the
travel warning for Mexico they issued in late April. Many of us,
particularly those of us that live here thought that for the CDC to
label an entire country with a population of over 100 million people as
one destination was unfair, especially when there are many areas of
Mexico where either no cases or very few cases of this virus.
For anyone who hesitated about a vacation to Cozumel because they
feared this flu virus, we'd ask you to consider several
things.
- We are not aware of any cases of this flu strain on Cozumel
- There are now more cases in the U.S. than in Mexico.
- The CDC has stated "the United States and other countries are
now seeing increasing numbers of cases not associated with travel to
Mexico."
- The CDC also reports "the risk of severe disease from novel
H1N1 virus infection now appears to be less than originally
thought."
A number of friends from the U.S. have been to Cozumel in the past
few weeks and several members of my family will be coming to Cozumel
soon also.
Are there Bargains now?
Well, yes and no. Even during high season, the cost of a vacation on
Cozumel is generally less than the cost of many other
destinations. If you check online you may be able to find some
good rates on airfare as travel to Cozumel is already on the increase
and should be back to normal soon.
During the summer and fall, rates for accommodations are generally a
bit lower and for a limited time there may even be some additional
discounts during the summer. However, don't expect to get
something for nothing. If you see a price that seems too good to
be true... it probably is. We'd urge you to deal with reputable
companies that you can verify and trust.

Go Karts
 |
A new go kart track has opened on the main street (Ave. Rafael
Melgar) and it’s just north of Mega grocery store, between Calle 11 and Punta Langosta Plaza. The cost is $10, and we watched 3 people as they were driving around the course and it looked like fun. |
Water, water everywhere
If you love the beach and ocean but you really like having a swimming pool just steps away from your house, how about combining the two. Here is a photo of what friends have done by having a mural painted on the wall by their pool. Clever, huh? |

 |
Good posture
I noticed this woman walking across the street at the corner of Ave. 30 and Calle 11. Couldn’t help but notice her beautiful posture and how she moved so gracefully. Maybe the idea of walking and balancing books on your head to improve your posture (or in this case, a large bowl) just might have some merit. |
And now there are three
A few weeks ago I stopped on a drive out north to take a picture of an airplane that has been there for years. I had never stopped to find out more about it, but then suddenly, I passed by and there
were 3 planes! |

|
| When I stopped to
take a photo of all 3 planes I also read the plaque. In part, it says that these planes are in recognition of the heroic participation of the Mexican Expeditionary Force 201st Fighter Squadron also know as the “Aztec Eagles”, in combat missions during World War II in defense of World Freedom and the Honor of Mexico. |
 |
These men were battling in fighter planes P-47 Thunderbolt against Japanese Imperial Army Forces for the liberation of the Philippines and were attached to the 58th American Fighter Group of the 5th Fighting Command of the Air Force of North America in 1945. |
If you stop to look, be sure to note the emblem on the tail of the planes. It’s the same emblem that was on the planes when they fought in the Philippine Islands: “Pancho
Pistolas”.
If you are interested in finding out more, go to the search engine “Google”, and search for “Aztec Eagles”. I found some fascinating information and even
some videos. |
 |
From what I have read, when German submarines torpedoed and sank Mexican oil tankers in the Gulf of
Mexico in May 1942, the USA and Mexico formed an alliance. Mexico declared war on the Axis powers and in 1944 sent its new fighter Squadron 201 to train in Texas
and were taught by women flight instructors of the W.A.S.P. program.
This marked the first time Mexican troops were trained for overseas combat. The Aztec Eagles flew a total of 59 combat missions, participated in the Allied effort to bomb Luzon and
Formosa and these pilots were decorated by both the U.S. and Mexico. |
|
All along the waterfront
Along the main waterfront street there are a number of different statues. We have included photos of a
several here. |

|
| EXCHANGE RATE. During April the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on
Cozumel was 12.85 to 13 pesos to the U.S. dollar.
Gracias y hasta luego,
