GoCozumel Monthly Newsletter, February 2009

A personal look at the island, written by an American who has lived on Cozumel since May 2000.

Beginners Yoga for Women
The new gym on Calle 11 near the corner of Ave. 5 is called “Ego”, and they have started a beginners yoga class designed for mature women. It is a basic course designed to help women stretch, become more limber, improve balance, tone muscles and I think it also helps with relaxation. The gym is a beautiful facility and they do have air conditioning.

There are a number of Yoga and Pilates classes at Ego, but the beginners class for women is from 10:00am to 11:00am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. For those that wish to come just 2 days a week the rate is 350 pesos a month (you can pick which days you prefer) or if you want to come all 3 days a week it is 450 pesos a month. If you are not sure, but you'd like to try one class to see what it's like the cost is 55 pesos per class.

Wear comfortable clothes you can stretch in, and the yoga exercises are done barefoot. The floor is cushioned and they provide mats but you can bring your own if you prefer. They do supply towels.

Ego is on Ave. 11 in the big building at the corner of Ave. 5. Compucentro is downstairs in the right part of the building, and so is the store Stanza. The door to the gym is at the left end of the building.

They also offer more advanced yoga and pilates classes available at other times. To take yoga classes you don’t have to be a member of the gym, but there is a discount on gym membership for those taking any of the yoga classes.
Remodeling on the passenger ferry pier downtown
The boats that take people from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen (on the mainland) and back dock at the downtown passenger ferry pier. That pier has been undergoing remodeling for a number of months.

Oceanfront luxury condo
There’s a beautiful, luxury oceanfront condo on Cozumel called Casa de las Abejas. It’s in a condo complex that is oceanfront and yet still in town, just about ¾ mile south of the main square. The location is extremely convenient as it’s right across the street from a major grocery store and within walking distance to quite a number of restaurants and shopping.
Casa de las Abejas is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath luxury condo on the ground floor and there is easy access from your oceanfront covered terrace to the swimming pools and sandy beach areas.

Your view of the turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean is stunning during the day, and you can watch the sunset from your oceanfront terrace.

Your stay at Casa de las Abejas includes daily maid service and guests at this condo complex have use of the large oceanfront area that includes the swimming pools and the lounge chairs around the pool, the tables and chairs in the patio area and boat pier. There is entry into the ocean for snorkeling just off shore, man made sandy beach areas with palapas for shade, an outdoor shower and drive rinse tank, and, in the basement area, each condo unit has their own locker where they may keep their dive or snorkeling gear and each condo gets the use of one parking space if they wish to rent a car.

There are also a number of other condos in this same luxury complex. To see a list, go to Cozumel Condos

Museum art exhibit – Greg Dietrich
There is an exhibit of the art work of local artist Greg Dietrich at the Cozumel Museum. It began on Feb. 6 and will be there until March 25. Greg is the owner of Galeria Azul and along with a wide variety of art work and paintings from a number of local artists, many of Greg’s designs in glass and some of his paintings are at his gallery. However, Greg’s work on display at the Cozumel Museum (El Museo) are ones that have never before been seen on Cozumel.

As you enter the museum, go around the left side of the stairs to one of the exhibit rooms at the back. Entrance is free. His exhibit includes engravings in blown glass and paintings on silk.
Gallery Istanbul
Located on the main oceanfront street, Ave. Rafael Melgar, Gallery Istanbul is between Calle 5 and Calle 7. They have oriental rugs, designer pillow covers, purses and a number of interesting and unusual decorator items.

This year, the annual Humane Society Art Auction was held at Gallery Istanbul

Carnaval 2009
For the last several years I’ve enjoyed watching the Carnaval parade while having dinner at Rock N Java Café on Ave. Melgar. This year I went to the parade on both Monday and Tuesday nights. Monday I had dinner at Rock N Java as usual, and Tuesday we went farther downtown.  On Tuesday night, in addition to the parade there were fireworks to enjoy and I was able to get photos of some fireworks as well as the parade.

The parade began near the corner of Ave. 13 and the oceanfront street (right by the grocery store Chedraui) and heads north along the waterfront street.  At the airport road they turn around and come south back down the oceanfront road. Carnaval parades generally begin about 6pm.

EXCHANGE RATE: During February 2009 the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the local banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from 13.5 to 13.75 pesos to the U.S. dollar.

Gracias y hasta luego,
