A personal look at the island, written by an American  who has lived on Cozumel since May 2000.

Color selection for paint
The Sherwin Williams store at the corner of Calle and Ave. 30 has a great display of all of the paint colors that they can mix for you. I recently bought some paint after looking through all of their sections, and taking a number of the color pallete cards home with me so I could check what would work best.

The colors worked just perfectly, and the newly painted walls look great.

Live Music, Free Beer and Cash Bar - Saturday, Nov. 22

It's at Playa Azul Beach Club - north of downtown and there is a restaurant available.   From 4pm till....?

Mega is BIG
The new Mega Comercial Mexicana store opened October 22 in Cozumel. It’s on the main oceanfront street, Ave Rafael Melgar at Calle 11. There is a great deal of parking space under cover on the first level, and the entire second level is a huge store that sells a lot more than groceries.

It reminds me of a Super Wal Mart. It seems to me that this store is about twice the size of the big Chedraui grocery store that is a couple of blocks farther south.

In addition to food, Mega has electronics, exercise equipment, furniture, paint, clothing for men, women and children, gardening tools, toys, books, jewelry, an in store bakery, a fast food section, wine and liquor.
The aisles are wide and they have a tremendous assortment of food.

Miss Dollar restaurant
I’ve had breakfast here a number of times, and it’s been quite good, the prices are very reasonable and the service is fast. You can order items individually, but their “packages” are the great value. One of the packages (#2) includes orange juice, coffee, a bacon and mushroom omelette and some type of bread or toast for 55 pesos. With the current exchange rate that’s less than $5 U.S. Although it doesn’t say it on the menu, every time I’ve ordered that package it has been served with hash browns too.

Miss Dollar is on Ave. 20, between Calle 3 and Rosado Salas. If you are driving, Ave. 20 in the downtown area is a one way street going north. Just after you pass Calle 3 there is a Laundromat on the right side and just past that on the left is Miss Dollar.

Galeria Azul
The art gallery called Galeria Azul (azul means blue) is not blue any more. Greg has repainted it orange.

But you will still find it filled with a wonderful selection of original local art plus a selection of prints.

Galeria Azul is on Ave. 10 between Rosado Salas and Calle 1.  They are normally open every evening between 5:30 and 9:30pm.

November 20 – Mexico Revolution Day
This official Mexican holiday celebrates the Mexican Revolution of 1910. On this date, in the year 1910, the war to overthrow the dictator Porfirio Díaz began. General Diaz had been an important military figure in Mexico, and he was in power for almost 30 years. During this time there was political stability and growth in many areas…new industries and railroads, but wealth was concentrated in the hands of only a few and the people of Mexico were not sharing in the benefits. They had no power to elect public officials or express their opinions.

In early 1909, Francisco Madero founded the Anti Reelectionist Party. Madero came from a wealthy family and had studied business in France as well as in the U.S. The Anti Reelectionist party designated him to run for President in the elections of 1910.

Diaz felt the pressure, and on June 6th he ordered that Madero be imprisoned, saying that he was “inciting rebellion and offending the authorities”. Madero patiently waited in prison until he learned that through fraud, Diaz had declared himself President of Mexico again. Although Madero had always been a pacifist, he escaped from prison and on November 20, 1910 he called for the overthow of the dictator, Diaz.

I've been told the parade begins between 8:30 and 9:00am at the north end of the downtown area (near Sedena Grocery) and will go south down the main oceanfront street, Ave. Rafael Melgar, and will end at the Palacio Municipal which is on the corner of Calle 13 and Ave. Rafael Melgar.

EXCHANGE RATE
During October the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel was 12 pesos to the U.S. dollar.

Gracias y hasta luego,
