GoCozumel Monthly Newsletter, October,  2007

A personal look at the island, written by an American  who has lived on Cozumel since May 2000.

In November, the Day of the Dead
November 1 (All Saints Day) and November 2 (All Souls Day), coincides with the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico. It’s called El Día de los Muertos and it’s a tradition and celebration that is often misunderstood. Basically, it’s a time when Mexican families remember their dead. They often gather at grave sites, decorate the graves with flowers and place offerings of food at the grave site. They gather to tell stories about their departed relatives and it’s a time of celebration and remembrance. Tradition has it that it’s during these times, that the spirit of the deceased can come and visit with their relatives for a day. This is not a morbid occasion, but a festive time. In the homes families arrange ofrenda's or "altars" with flowers, bread, fruit and candy and there are pictures of the deceased family members. In the stores you can find chocolate skulls, marzipan coffins, and white chocolate skeletons. Special loaves of bread are baked, called pan de muertos, and decorated with design of bones. It’s a rich egg-batter bread sprinkled with sugar and it is good luck to be the one who bites into the plastic toy skeleton hidden by the baker in each rounded loaf.
House for sale
A 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath house with a swimming pool in the popular Corpus Cristi area is now for sale. In 2006 this home was enlarged and remodeled and now has a beautiful gourmet kitchen, a laundry room with storage and lots of other extras. In pristine condition. Photos are online at http://www.gocozumel.com/house20.htm
Optica Cozumel
I’ve mentioned this optical shop before when I took a friend there who needed to buy some contact lenses for scuba diving. In the last few months I’ve had occasion to go there a couple of times. Once, a friend bent the frames of their glasses so badly that they couldn’t wear them at all and one of the lenses had popped out. They really looked like they might be beyond hope, but they were able to straighten them out just fine. The second time, one of the lenses on my glasses came out when I lost the screw that was holding the lens in. Both times, Optica Caribe repaired the frames right away, it took only about 5-10 minutes, and the cost was quite reasonable. Optica Cozumel is on Ave. 10 between Calle 7 and Calle 9.

Dolphinaris
Just recently opened is a new Swin with Dolphins program near downtown called Dolphinaris. It’s on the main waterfront street just south of the big grocery store, Chedarui. This all new facility has a restaurant, a boutiuque, internet café, restrooms and changing rooms, lockers and rental of snorkeling equipment.

I’ve been told that the cost of their swim with dolphin program is $155 U.S., that it lasts about 45 minutes and it’s available for ages 5 years and up. They do say that you need to book at least 1 day in advance.

Tourist office
The tourist office used to be downtown, but with the buildings being rebuilt downtown there is now a new tourist office. It is at the corner of Ave. 20 and Calle 15 (Xel-Ha)
4 bedroom vacation villa – excellent holiday rates
Casa Chac Pool is in the process of being completely refurnished and the swimming pool has been lined in beautiful ceramic tile. With the addition of a beautiful rock waterfall that pours into the pool, the large garden area is an absolute delight Photos of the swimming pool, waterfall and the new bedroom furniture are now online. The new, custom made living room and dining furniture is due to be delivered in early November.
Fall discount rates are now in effect for any remaining dates in November (between November 15 and December 15) and an excellent rate for Christmas and New Years week is available. If you have a group of 6-10 guests looking for a great vacation villa on Cozumel, either for the last minute late fall 2007 or for the Christmas or New Years holiday, this is not only an excellent bargain, but with new furnishings throughout, the beautiful large garden, the tiled swimming pool and rock waterfall, it’s a peaceful get-away to relax and unwind. See the website http://www.gocozumel.com/chacpool

EXCHANGE RATE
During October the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from 10.7 to 10.8 pesos to the U.S. dollar.

Gracias y hasta luego,
